The ‘kua’ of Kuakata:

The name ‘Kuakata’ has its origins in the Bangla word ‘Kua’, which means ‘well’. The historical significance of this naming is still evident today through an ancient well located in the village of Keranipara, where the Rakhine community resides. As you enter this village, you’ll come across the well that holds the historical memory.

The story goes back to 1784 when the Rakhine people were forced to leave their homeland and sought refuge on Rangabali Island along the Bay of Bengal’s shores. To meet their fresh water needs, they dug a well (kua) as the seawater was not suitable for use due to its salinity. Over time, this place became known as Kuakata, symbolizing the legacy of the well that provided sustenance to the displaced community.

Seema Buddhist Temple:

After crossing the ancient Kua of Kuakata and proceeding a short distance, you will come across the Seema Buddhist temple. Previously constructed with wood, the temple has recently been replaced with a new building. Inside the temple, there is an ancient Buddhist statue crafted from all eight types of metal, weighing approximately 37 maunds.
